This course will provide a brief overview of numerical weather prediction (NWP) to students wishing to more fully understand and/or apply numerical modeling capabilities to potential research projects. The course will begin with a general description of what a NWP model is and how it is structured, followed by a series of lectures explaining how to find data, correctly apply it to specific projects, and interpret modeled information for a variety of cases. These cases and examples will be focused on assessment of warm-season precipitation. Finally, the course will include an overview of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, including its structure, use, and application to student projects.
