The law of international organisations (LIO) comprises the rules that govern their legal status, structure, and functioning. The course content includes six blocks, each combining an introductory lecture (15 hours total) and corresponding discussion sessions (an additional 15 hours), which feature elements of active learning (presentations, Oxford-style debates, sketchnoting, etc.). Legal issues concerning international organisations are relevant in multiple contexts. The course's main objective is to endow students with knowledge and a critical understanding of the institutional life of intergovernmental organisations (IGOs): their legal personality, legitimacy and performance. Emphasis will be placed especially on the UN organisational system, specific regional IGOs, and their relationship. Attendance and participation in discussion sessions are compulsory.
