This course will present a broad overview of the physical processes associated with the interaction between the Earth’s surface and the atmosphere. Specifically, topics related to the movement of heat will be covered, from radiation to surface heat fluxes to a full energy balance. Subsequent lectures will cover concepts related to the atmospheric boundary layer, where the Earth’s surface and the atmosphere directly interact. This will include a discussion of low-level winds, energy, and moisture, all of which are defined by surface features and patterns. Finally, the course will include a series of case studies whereby students will gain an understanding of how surface characteristics modify the atmosphere, and how local-scale weather patterns and conditions can be changed based on planning and management of the local land cover.
